Negawatt Resources was founded in 1992 by Grant Dunford. The idea of the negawatt as a unit of energy saved was inspired by the work of Amory Lovins of the Rocky Mountain Institute in Colorado, USA.
In 1993 very few educational resources were available about energy efficiency so Negawatt sought sponsorship for a schools programme which it marketed as Energy Action. Most teaching resources are sent to schools, but with no support. Consequently they sit on shelves, untouched.
Energy Action was different - teachers were employed to facilitate the resource into the science and technology curriculum. Negawatt staff helped teachers with their teaching plans for the year, using exercises incorporated into Energy Action. The home folder was particularly successful, with children educating their parents about energy efficiency. Energy Action was delivered into 1,400 schools.
In recent years Negawatt has developed into a full service energy efficiency business, offering products, services and advice on the whole building envelope, both domestic and commercial.
Key product areas are solar hot water, thermal, acoustic and under floor insulation, water efficiency, lighting and heat recovery ventilation systems.
